Keep it bright!

Keep it bright!
Oh the skinny and colorful jeans. Though not for everyone right. You can get the bright colors in chino style pants too. Look for them almost anywhere. I have seen them at J Crew, Nordstrom and Loft.

Pleats and Polka Dots

The feminine and beautiful pleated skirt. So glad it is a big trend this season. As are polka dots. They are great in a flowy fabric to the knee or down to the ankle as I prefer them. If you look around you will find them in bright colors as well. Yesterday was a beautiful day down in Georgetown, though chilly. I would love to live down there. Every house is so unique and charming. I imagine getting up on a beautiful day and walking to get a cup of morning coffee. Then of course returning  to have a nice glass of wine and a yummy something. It would be great to be able to walk everywhere. I guess for now I will have to settle for driving down and fighting to get a parking spot. It's worth it though.

Looks of the season

Looks of the season
It is all about color blocking this season. Have fun mixing colors. I feel like we are little girls with crayons and can color our pictures however we want. Try it even if it is just a bright colored purse that you add to whatever you are going to wear.

Celebration!

Ok, so I will admit it. I had a birthday and my sister, her husband and daughter had a beautiful and very gourmet dinner for me. It is never disappointing going to dinner at their house. The table is always beautifully set and the food exquisite. The hubby and I would rather dine there than in a restaurant. Shrimp and grits this time. Yum!!

See recipe below.

Martha Nesbit's Shrimp and Grits.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups water
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 cup stone-ground grits
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 6 slices bacon, chopped
  • 4 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
  • 1 cup thinly sliced scallions
  • 1 large clove garlic, minced

Directions

Bring water to a boil. Add salt and pepper. Add grits and cook until water is absorbed, about 20 to 25 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in butter and cheese.
Rinse shrimp and pat dry. Fry the bacon in a large skillet until browned; drain well. In grease, add shrimp. Cook until shrimp turn pink. Add lemon juice, chopped bacon, parsley, scallions and garlic. Saute for 3 minutes.
Spoon grits into a serving bowl. Add shrimp mixture and mix well. Serve immediately.

Spring has sprung.

My favorite neighborhood tree.

The DC area is exploding with color just like the spring fashions. The trees right now are just beautiful.  Wish it could last all summer. I am not complaining though, because we are so lucky to live in a very lush and green area. This is one of my favorite new jackets. I love the European flair and the crisp white color. It is something you can wear with a pair of jeans or dress it up with perhaps a black pencil skirt. Notice the beautiful necklace. I had it custom made by a local and very talented jewelry designer. Every piece is one of a kind and you won't be disappointed. Please let her know I sent you.

Spring fling

Spring fling
The look for this spring and summer is color, color, color. Bright yellows, tangerines, pinks and bright blue. Mix and match. For me, that is a good thing because I love a very colorful world. I saw this dress at Bloomingdales and thought it was so pretty. It has a vintage flair, which I love. Thought I would throw in a variety of looks in shoes. A colorful flat or sandal with a lower heel would work. I know a lot of you are no longer comfy in heels. Bright and colorful jeans are also a fun look this season. These red ones would look really nice with a cream silk like blouse. Have fun experimenting! And have an awesome weekend too.

Morning smoothie

I begin every day with a green smoothie. This is a new thing that I have been doing as part of my effort to live a healthier life. It has all fresh ingredients, is delicious and hydrating. Serve it in a pretty glass. I am sipping one as we speak. For some of you, don't let the ingredients fool you. It is really sweet and yummy and I really encourage you to try it. See my recipe below. Enjoy and I hope you are having a great weekend!

Green Smoothie
(all FRESH ingredients)

Spinach
Romain lettuce
1ripe banana
one honey crisp apple or 1 cup (approx.) chopped pineapple
low-fat yogurt (optional)

I make mine without the yogurt.  Fill the blender (or food processor) with fresh spinach, 1/2-1 cup of shredded Romain lettuce and 1/2 cup water mixed with crushed ice. If using blender grind until very smooth. Add the apple or pineapple or both if desired. Grind again until very smooth. Serve and enjoy.

Almost spring

Ok, I think that winter is over for the most part, though technically not until March 21st. I will go ahead and set the winter looks aside and start moving on to spring. I know all the magazines and stores have all their spring things out but I was trying to hold out because my photographer has been very busy lately. Ha! This dress is a perfect transition piece. Nice comfy cotton but with long sleeves for the cool air. I like to put boots with it for now and switch to sandals in the spring and summer. A chunky necklace adds a nice pop. I am all about that, you'll see.

Cheetahlicious!

I love animal prints. The Cheetah or Leopard prints are the most popular. They look very similar if you ask me, enough so I had to look them up.  So much fun to wear and add a real punch to any outfit. You can wear the print in a pencil skirt as shown here or a scarf, shoes or belt. Perhaps just a bag also. Red is a great color to pair with it. Go on and try it!
